Often described as the Formula 1 of sailing, SailGP has taken the sport by storm. But how did we get here?

The first-ever Grand Prix in Rio de Janeiro is undoubtedly an exciting moment for the sport — and there can be few more thrilling cities to visit for a SailGP race.

A truly iconic setting will see U.S. SailGP Team battle for points under the looming presence of Christ the Redeemer, sitting atop Corcovado Mountain.

The famous Sugarloaf Mountain also adorns the Rio coastline, of course, and there is no shortage of entertainment inland, with visitors able to sample Brazil’s renowned samba rhythms across the city.

From the Maracanã Stadium to Lapa’s vibrant nightlife and the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, this is certainly one of the highlights of the SailGP calendar.
