U.S. SailGP Team: Our Season So Far

Here’s how the United States have been getting on so far this season
Published 03/9/2025
The U.S. SailGP Team made a strong start to 2025 — kicking off the campaign with a third-place finish in Dubai.
A 32-point haul across Round 1’s five fleet races saw the US edge ahead of Spain and Australia to reach the season’s first final, where they faced Emirates GBR and New Zealand. Though they were unable to finish in front of the British and Peter Burling’s triumphant outfit, the team will nonetheless have enjoyed their positive showing in the Middle East.
Fleet Race 1 was a particular highlight, as the US topped the table to put ten points on the board, before adding a further nine as runners-up in Fleet Race 5.
The following two Grands Prix have been more of a challenge, however. A trip to New Zealand in January resulted in an 11th-place finish, despite making a solid start by claiming nine points across the event’s first two fleet races.
Taylor Canfield’s charges were unable to significantly add to that, though, adding just nine further points over the race weekend. There were more challenges to come in Round 3, when the team’s boat capsized en route to practice racing that saw their wingsail damaged and prevented any further participation in the KPMG Australia GP. The result was 12 penalty points for the US, leading to a reduction of eight points in the overall standings.
Fortunately, there is plenty of time to bounce back, with the campaign only in its formative stages. Team CEO Mike Buckley hinted as much, when reflecting on a difficult few days in Sydney. “We now look towards LA and San Francisco as our opportunity to get back out on the water and make up for lost points this weekend,” he said. “We’re excited to race at home and see all the US flags out in the crowd supporting our team.”
Two home races in succession certainly offer room for positivity — and the potential to put more points on the board. There will also be a third stateside event of the year following the ENEL Rio Grand Prix in May, when SailGP heads to New York in Round 7.
Plenty of excitement certainly lies in store, then, as the season starts to gather pace over the coming months.
