REPORT: U.S. SailGP Team Unable To Build On Fast Starts

Threre were mixed fortunes for the U.S. SailGP Team on Day 1 in San Francisco

Lady Luck appeared to abandon the U.S. SailGP Team on Day 1 of the Oracle San Francisco Sail Grand Prix, going 11-11-9-9 on home waters.
The day instead belonged to Canada who won two races and bagged a second place to go into Day 2 top of the standings, three points ahead of Australia in second and six points clear of third-placed Spain.
In the shadows of Alcatraz and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, Taylor Canfield and co. endured a tough start to the first race. Unable to make headway at a congested start line, the U.S. Team fought hard to work their way forward from the rear of the fleet, but ultimately finished 11th.

However, it was all change in Fleet Race 2. France - winners of Race 1 - found themselves at the back at the pack in a dramatic role reversal. That was because the U.S. SailGP Team were among those to start well at the line and soon advanced into third.
Things were going well and the U.S. climbed to second. However, a breakdown in communication proved costly, flying too high and taking on a significant amount of water. With the brakes effectively applied, the U.S. slipped to the back of the fleet and finished 11th.
The fine line between success and failure was never clearer than in Fleet Race 3 where the U.S. SailGP Team were penalized at the start line and sent to the back of the fleet. However, after battling hard, they moved past Brazil and Germany to take ninth and bank two points.

A flying start to Fleet Race 4 saw the U.S. SailGP Team clocking a speed of 90.15 km/h, the fastest of the day. But more misfortune was around the corner, getting too high, too loose and slipping sideways, losing all their grip on the foil to slip back to 11th. More resilience saw the U.S. climb to ninth, finishing Day 1 on four points.
Racing resumes on Day 2 at 2:30pm PDT. Make sure you’re following along with our live blog and across our social channels for full coverage.
