U.S. SailGP Team Posts Strong Finish On Day 1 In LA
U.S. SailGP Team impress on home waters in Rolex Los Angeles Grand Prix

The U.S. SailGP Team finished Day 1 of the Rolex Los Angeles Grand Prix strongly to take 7th place on the leaderboard, putting themselves in contention ahead of Championship Sunday.
New Zealand tops the leaderboard ahead of Day 2 after clinching two race wins in the Port of Los Angeles.
Winds of 25 km/h gusting 35 km/h on a tight course made for competitive - and at times chaotic - sailing.
In warmer conditions than had been prevalent through practice on Friday, Taylor Canfield and the U.S. SailGP Team made a strong start at the line in Fleet Race 1. After slipping to 10th at one point, they rallied to take 7th.
Having started the day with a historic 12-team field for the first time, it was soon back to 11 teams. Denmark, who collided with the race mark in the first fleet race, were unable to continue.
It was a similar story in Fleet Race 2 for the home team, which saw Australia incur a penalty on the US. A tussle with Spain at close quarters resulted in an eighth-place finish for the U.S. SailGP Team.
Penalties were a theme of Fleet Race 3, with New Zealand and Switzerland penalized for early starts. The U.S. SailGP Team avoided danger, though, and dramatically got the better of neighbours Canada to clinch fourth place.
The U.S. SailGP Team followed that success up with a fifth-place finish in Fleet Race 4, finishing with 20 points – just a point behind Sydney Grand Prix winners Great Britain in the standings.
They have three further fleet races on Sunday to earn a place in the final. Racing in Los Angeles resumes at 2pm PDT on March 16.
