5 Things You Need to Know About the LA GP

We take a closer look at this weekend's Los Angeles GP as U.S. SailGP Team returns to home waters
Published 03/12/2025
The U.S. SailGP Team are back on home waters for the first of two back-to-back raceweeks, which start this weekend (March 15-16) at the Rolex Los Angeles Sail Grand Prix.
After suffering disappointment in Sydney last month, the U.S. SailGP Team will be looking to bounce back in front of a home crowd at the Port of Los Angeles.
Here are five things you need to know ahead of the weekend…
Testing conditions
Situated on the Port of Los Angeles, this is one of the most testing racecourses on the calendar owing to its tight configuration.
Surrounded by the LA shoreline and the breakwater, the margin for error is virtually non-existent.
With speeds of up to 60 mph, the F50s will be put through their paces and you can expect plenty of thrills and spills!
Home advantage
LA is the first of three home events for the U.S. SailGP Team with San Francisco (March 22-23) and New York (June 7-8) to come.
CEO and Strategist Mike Buckley says it is something the crew have been looking forward to.
“There's nothing better than racing at home,” he said. “So to be here in the US, and getting out to LA after what they've gone through in the last few months, is something we've been looking forward to for a while.”
Surprise package Spain
Spain made history in LA last year, by claiming their first ever SailGP event win – beating Season 3 champions Australia and Denmark to top spot.
The Spanish team had snuck into the Final by a single point and made it count, marking their first Final appearance with a first event win in team history.
After Great Britain claimed victory in Sydney last time out, could we see another surprise on the West Coast?
Tight turnarounds spell trouble
With just a week between LA and San Francisco, steering clear of trouble will be imperative to any chances of success in the US.
After the U.S. SailGP Team suffered damage to the wing sail, it was weekend over for Taylor Canfield’s crew.
They weren't alone, though – Germany and Brazil collided in one of the practice races and both were penalized.
Any repeats will be extremely costly with such a short turnaround.
Enjoy the full LA experience!
The sailing rightly takes centre stage in LA this weekend but don’t miss out on the full experience. We all know about the magic of Hollywood – and there’s plenty going on!
Roaming brass band Brass Animals will be on hand to play a variety of hits, to ensure there is a vibrant party atmosphere at the Race Stadium throughout.
There will be a cap graffiti artist to customize your SailGP caps next to the FanShop, as well as a social media wall, T-Shirt cannons and a hype squad.
The Race Stadium will be open until 4:30pm, meaning there’s plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere only race day can bring, shop for souvenirs and sample the variety of food and drink options to make the most of your experience!
