The U.S. SailGP Team kicked off the 2025 season at the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix by earning a podium finish and starting the season in third place.
“It was an awesome weekend in Dubai and I am proud of our team’s performance to kick off the 2025 season,” said Mike Buckley, 2x World Champion Sailor, U.S. SailGP Team CEO, and Co-Owner. “Of course you always want to win, but after all the hard-work and practice the last few months to go to Dubai and finish on the podium it’s a great start and I know our team will keep on improving throughout the season.”
Following months of training and spending the last two weeks in Dubai, the U.S. SailGP team kicked off the 2025 season winning the first race of the year catapulting them with some momentum all weekend. Following the opening race, the squad finished in seventh place in the second and third race before taking sixth in race four. With the U.S. needing a strong performance to reach the Grand Final in Dubai, they buckled down and came up with a second-place finish in the fifth race. This tied the U.S. with Spain for points over the weekend, but the U.S. advanced due to finishing higher in the other races.
“To finish on the podium at any SailGP event is incredible, it’s awesome to see how all the hard work we have put in is paying off,” Canfield said. “Everyone dug deep and found a way to get better today. That’s the goal and it just shows how driven we are, and that everyone’s got that fight in them — so yeah we are pumped.”
In the Mina Rashid final, the U.S. battled it out with New Zealand and Emirates GBR in a thrilling competition that saw the New Zealand SailGP team taking home the victory followed by Emirates GBR coming in second.
As the U.S. SailGP team started the season strong in Dubai, one integral part of their showing was having their performance engineer in person rather than remote. By having a Head Coach and a performance engineer in Dubai it helped provide a breakthrough to kick off the 2025 season and will look for another great event in Auckland on Jan 17-18.
“We had two weeks of pre-season training in Dubai and I think this really helped our team leading into this event,” said U.S. SailGP Team Head Coach Evan Aras. “We had a great weekend taking third place and winning the opening race. We also delivered under pressure when it counted to make the Grand Final and we are thrilled to take third.”
